Getting to know you

Think about one of your friends and how the friendship started.

Did you meet and just click and become friends straight away?

Some friendships start this way.

Friendships take time to develop because people need to get to know each other. Usually we like to find out about the other person's interests and ideas, and what the person likes and dislikes.

By getting to know another person, you learn what you have in common with each other. This means you get to work out how similar or different you are.

Remember, making friendships is about getting to know another person.

Getting to know another person will help you decide if you want to be friends.

Below are some important points about friendships that may be worth a thought or two.

  • You are unique. No one thinks, feels or acts exactly the same way as you do, so not everyone will have the same ideas and interests as you.
  • Some people need lots of friends while other people need only a few or just one.
  • Some people find it hard to make friends and other people find it heaps easy.
  • Some friendships may last for a very long time while other friendships may be short. This can be because as we grow and change we may develop ideas and interests that are different from our friend's and this leads to a natural growing apart.
  • Some people have different friends for different times, like to play a sport with, to go riding with, just to talk to or to do school work with.
