Negative stress works against us

Here is an example of negative stress:

I can’t do this! I’m not as good as the others! I’m hopeless! I’ve let the team down!

It’s the last practice before Sports day at your school. Matt is not keen on being in the relay because he’s not as fast as the other team members and he is worried that he will let them down.

During the race he falls over on purpose and hopes that another person will replace him in the next race on Sports day. Everyone got mad at him for not trying.

This example shows that by Matt deciding not to do his best in the race he ends up feeling he’s hopeless and that he has let other people down.

Worksheet – Me and negative stress

What to do: Write or draw about a time when negative stress led you to have negative feelings eg angry, sad, worried, scared

  • What was the SITUATION?
  • What did you DO?
  • How did you FEEL?
  • What were you THINKING?

Here are some ideas for different ways to record your story.

  • write about it,
  • draw one scene that tells it all,
  • design a cartoon strip,
  • make a collage of magazine cut outs
